Doug, a Canadian, currently lives in New York City where he attends Times Square Church. He is the youngest of two boys and the son of Robert J. Smith, one of Bannerman Publishing's other authors. 

He has been writing nearly every day since 1998. In 1999 he suffered a life altering injury in his spine around the time he completed his Master of Business Administration degree. The Lord continued to bless him with these writings during the years of recovery and his collection has come to include proverbs, songs, poems and devotionals. At last count, taken years ago, he had thousands of proverbs but since then has lost track of the tally. He says his first writing that could be called a proverb remains one of his favorites, "It is so simple, all You want is everything."
